Sports...

Sports.

A topic completely foreign to me.

I know nothing of batting, running, kicking, stealing, sliding, catching or any rules that go along side those terms.

Growing up in my house, we watch football sometimes...and usually only during the Superbowl. And still, while I’ve grown up watching it, I know nothing of the sport. I’ve never played sports in my life, I can do the music thing, I can do the art thing but sports are way out of my league.

There was one time that I tried playing baseball, and messed up my shoulder. I tried golfing and accidentally hit my dad with the club while trying to swing at the little ball. I was hit too many times in basketball and don’t have the co-ordination for running and bouncing a ball at the same time. Let alone shoot it into this hanging net that’s way above my head. And I can’t skate so hockey is out.

It’s just a bad scene when sports and I entwine but I wish I at least understood what was happening in a game. I can understand a little bit of soccer and hockey as I have ex’s who played and tried to teach me. I’ve learned a little football from my father and am now in the process of learning about baseball.

But I’m pretty sure that I could never, in my entire life, carry on a conversation surrounding any sport. It’s actually really sad. I wish I understood, or had more motivation to learn. But...I don’t.

You and I are two peas in a pod, I tell you. Not only do we share the same birthday (So what there's a two day difference), but we share the same lost, unintelligent look when it comes to sports. I tried long jump once, but discovered my legs are to short to jump very far...

I'm in the same boat as you- sports don't interest me and learning about them doesn't really, either. Guess it would be nice to be able to sit with my friends who like sports and not be annoying them every five seconds with questions, but I am who I am. Some people are really sports-oriented, but others, like you and me, have different fortes and talents... so just because you don't understand sports doesn't mean you aren't just as awesome as someone who does!

I've always been sports-oriented, but I tend to jump around. When I was little, I loved baseball. I got it mostly from my parents; they used to watch the Expos when they lived in Montreal.

I even played little league as a kid (I was terrible, but that's another story). I grew up a Blue Jays fan, and seeing them win back-to-back World Series' in '92-'93 is one of my favourite memories from my childhood. After those years, the whole face of the team changed pretty quickly, and I just lost interest.

I still go to games from time to time, but my agenda these days is completely different. FOOD! The third inning is a good time for a hot dog. The sixth inning is for nachos and beer. The seventh inning stretch is for peanuts and/or crackerjacks. And the ninth innning is time for a celebratory (or consolatory, depending on the game's result) beer.

Just as my interest in baseball was fading, I discovered hockey. The Ottawa Senators came to town in 1992, and I pretty much fell in love with the sport right away. Up until then, skating had never been a source of much enjoyment for me. I can still remember nights skating on the Rideau Canal, freezing my toes off and praying for some damn hot chocolate. But this was different... It was inside! With goals! And hitting! And fighting! I thought it was the coolest sport ever, and I still feel that way today.
